Urban Funk Dance (originally Bairnsdale Jazz Funk) was established in 2002, the first commercial dance school in the area. Founder, Renee Hallahan, introduced this modern and fresh style of dance to East Gippsland and the school quickly took off. In 2006, Casey Davidge took over as principal and continues to run UFD today.
Urban Funk Dance now houses many styles, including commercial jazz, hip hop/funk, musical theatre, all boys hip hop, urban burlesque and acro dance. UFD are proud to be East Gippsland's first commercial dance school, and leaders of the ever-growing industry in the area.
Enrolments begin at prep age and up to adult, for all levels and ability, where dancers can learn in a positive, fun, and encouraging atmosphere. Casual and fitness classes are available, and there also are performance teams for dancers that meet the requirements to represent UFD on a competitive level.
The UFD Performance Teams compete at various dance competitions and local eisteddfods, as well as the Crown International Dance Festival in Melbourne.
UFD dancers perform at the annual dance showcase, local school events, community fundraisers and the end of year dance concerts. To date, the UFD community have raised over $30,000 for local and national charities and we value the importance of giving back where possible through our benefit performances.
UFD are proud to be affiliated with the East Gippsland Dance Festival, an initiative directed by local dance teacher Bobbie Hall, that provides an annual event for dancers to learn under a variety of professional choreographers in the industry.
Past UFD students have gone on to train and work at a tertiary level, both in Australia and USA. This includes Jason Coleman's Ministry Of Dance, film and television work, promotional appearances and more.
Urban Funk Dance is an all-inclusive dance school, where individuals are encouraged to let their light shine in their chosen style of dance, no matter their age, background or physical ability. We encourage dancers to work to their full potential, whether that be on a casual level or to develop their skills to perform in a professional arena.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, UFD is currently closed and we look forward to opening our doors again very soon!
